Gum Grafting

Gum Grafting Can Correct Gum Recession Caused By Periodontal Disease

What is Gum Grafting?

According to the American Dental Association, “Gum grafting, also known as a periodontal treatment or gum recession surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to place healthy gum tissue in areas where gums have receded.” It is a common treatment for individuals experiencing gum recession due to various factors, such as gum disease, aggressive tooth brushing, or genetics.

When is Gum Grafting Needed?

The gums may wear away, or recede, for several reasons, including:

  • Root exposure on one or more teeth.
  • Root sensitivity.
  • Inflammation of the tissues.
  • Aesthetic concerns.
  • Gum disease.
  • Bone and gum deterioration.
  • Tooth loss.

Some issues causing gum recession are more serious than others, such as gum disease. When you think gum disease might be the culprit of your gum line receding, you can trust our West Valley Implant Dental team to take care of your oral health.

Our team will work to stabilize your supporting structures like your gums and bone so that you can have dental implants placed as well as cosmetic procedures done. With our help, you’ll soon have your most beautiful, healthiest smile ever.

GUM GRAFTING TREATMENTS FOR RECEDING GUMS

Patients who have receding gums often have gum disease, or periodontal disease, which often causes gum tissue to recede and expose the roots of the teeth. This recession not only reduces the natural protection teeth need but also affects the way they look.

When the gum line begins to wear away, it can cause your teeth to appear uneven and larger than normal. If gum disease is present, treatment is necessary before a gum grafting procedure can occur.Older man and woman couple smiling

Depending on your level of tissue damage, existing conditions, and other factors, Dr. Penhaskashi can suggest one of three different gum grafting procedures.

CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFTS

A connective tissue graft is commonly used to return lost tissue to areas around one or more teeth. A flap is cut on the roof of the mouth to remove soft tissue which is then transferred to the recession area and sutured. In time, the new tissue blends with the existing gums for a natural and healthy-looking gum line.

FREE GINGIVAL GRAFTS

A free gingival gum graft works in similar ways to a connective tissue graft and is often suggested for patients with very thin gums. Dr. Penhaskashi can take soft tissue directly from the roof of the mouth—rather than from underneath a flap—and transfer the tissue to the receding gums site for a longer, more attractive gum line.

PEDICLE GRAFTS

A pedicle graft is performed right at the recession site and is a preferable method for patients who may have receding gums but have not yet lost a significant amount of soft tissue. Dr. Penhaskashi creates a flap right on the gum line, pulls the tissue over the roots, and sutures the tissue in place.

Note: In some situations, grafting material from a tissue bank may be used to perform a gum graft instead of relying on the patient’s own oral tissue.

Following a Gum Graft Procedure

Patients who have treatment for receding gums should expect to feel some tenderness after the grafting surgery. If a sedative is administered, a friend or family member will need to drive you home.

Steps to take after your procedure may include using a prescribed mouthwash to control bacteria. Avoid brushing and flossing the treated areas and try to eat only soft foods for a time until the gums heal.
